Cam Newton Battles Week 1

(FFChamps) Newton had a strong first half with one passing and one rushing touchdown but was slowed down in the second half by the strong Broncos defensive unit. Kelvin Benjamin had a nice first game back from injury with six catches in 12 targets for 91 yards and Greg Olsen TD in had a solid seven catches for 73 yards. 21 of 31 passing attempts went Benjamin and Olsen’s way in the tough matchup at Denver. Newton was hit often by the Broncos pass rush including a helmet-to-helmet hit late in the game negated by an intentional grounding call. There will be better games to come for Newton, fantasy owners should be patient at this point in time.

Analysis: Cam Newton went 18-for-33 with 194 yards passing, one passing touchdown, one interception, 54 yards rushing on 11 attempts to go along with one rushing touchdown in the Panthers 21-20 loss to the Broncos in the season opener.

Nothing new here… Cam is a week in and week out stud of a fantasy football QB. Watch his health though. Cam matches up well with other QB because of his rushing ability. But that ability also puts the blue chip quarterback in harms way. If you’re a Cam owner carry a backup. He got roughed up by the Broncos defense tonight and that trend could continue. Remember a year ago today when Cam was severely under valued? He was valued low because he was one of the most sacked QBs in the NFL and his production suffered.
